An antiquarian Thomasina Bateman is writing a book on the barrows of England in which she documents the treasures that she discovers in. A fascinating letter prompts her to travel to the small village of Bewlay in the remote countryside of England. The author travels by train, along with her assistant that same day.
When she arrives, however she discovers that the mysterious person who was supposed to summon her cannot be located. Her assistant never arrives. A stubborn landowner refuses access to his barrow while the people in the area are wary of the woman who’s going on her own, and (gasp!) wears trousers.
